What we learned:

• Iowa continues to be the cat with 9 lives!! They showed tremendous heart as they overcame 5 picks by QB Stanzi to score 28 unanswered points in their come from behind win to not only beat Indiana but still cover the 17 point spread!! Despite their perfect record pollsters and the general public continue to not take them seriously as contenders. However, the Hawkeyes get their chance to silence those critics when they play Ohio State in 2 weeks. Let’s just hope they don’t get caught looking ahead this week when they host Northwestern, a team that is capable of winning!!

• Ohio State lost respect with me over the weekend after they embarrassed New Mexico State. It wasn’t the fact that they won big that bothered me but instead how they did it. Everyone knows Tressel is a very conservative play caller and yet for some reason felt the need to go to his bag of tricks to make a bad situation worse. Tressel called an onsides kick after scoring the first TD and then later called a double reverse pass that went for a TD. In my opinion this was a classless act by Coach Tressel and he ought to be ashamed of himself!! Perhaps the next time Tressel goes to his bag of tricks it will be in a game that actually matters and against a worthy opponent!!

• Speaking of classless acts how about TCU coach Gary Patterson and his decision to throw the ball for a TD with just 1:40 left and a 34-0 lead?? I always liked Patterson and his team but his actions are unacceptable and say nothing about sportsmanship and what coaches like him are supposed to be teaching to kids at this level. I always admire and respect those coaches who tell their kids to take a knee on the opponent’s 1-yard line when the game is “over”. And is it just coincidence that the TD gave TCU the cover??

• Texas continues to be over-rated despite beating Oklahoma State this past weekend in a game where they were out-gained!! It humors me to see pollsters rank them higher than Alabama and also give them first place votes!! As I have said before this team has benefited from the easiest schedules in the nation and it only gets easier the rest of the way!! This isn’t me being a Texas hater it’s just me being a realist and stating facts!! Wouldn’t it be hilarious if they lost to Central Florida this week??

• How about Temple and Idaho!? A few weeks back people started hyping Army and Duke as Bowl candidates but I trashed those hypsters immediately in support of Temple and Idaho – and both have proved me right so far becoming Bowl eligible with their wins this weekend!! However, I am willing to eat crow with Duke and acknowledge that with their win over Virginia the team already won one more game than I said they would!! With that said Duke fans shouldn’t pack their bags because the Devils are not Bowling this year!!

• And how about the Ducks from Oregon?? This team might be the best team in the nation right now despite their opening week loss. What they did to USC was just amazing!! Over 600 yards of total offense including nearly 400 on the ground – AMAZING!! Even Pete Carroll looked like a deer in headlights!! I have a ton of respect for Coach Carroll and admire what he has done over the years but as a fan of the sport it is even nice for me to watch guys like him have to eat a piece of humble pie once in a while!!
