What we have learned so far:

  • Iowa ran out of lives!! Building a reputation as the “comeback kids” this week it was the Hawkeyes on the receiving end of a comeback by Northwestern that more than likely blew their chances of getting a BCS bowl berth. Up 10-0 early it looked as if Iowa would cruise to another win but then their worst nightmare happened – QB Stanzi went down with a severe ankle injury and his season may be over!!
  • After losing to Navy at home Notre Dame proved once again why they can’t be taken seriously. I have always said some coaches are better assistants than head coaches and visa versa and some coaches are better college coaches than NFL coaches and visa versa – and Charlie Weiss fits that bill. In my opinion Weiss is (was) a great NFL assistant coach but will never be a good college head coach! Notre Dame front office needs to seriously evaluate their coaching situation and make changes if they ever want to be a legitimate contender again.
  • Georgia Tech needed overtime to get by Wake Forest. Tech is probably the most over-rated top 10 team I have seen! This team is like Houston – a very good offense that is fun to watch but a defense that is actually humorous at times with how bad they really are. You can’t take teams like this seriously because when they face legitimate opponents with great defenses they typically get crushed!
  • Speaking of Houston their awesome defense gave up 45 more points to Tulsa and they had to hang on for the 1-point win. I love watching this offense play but the team just can’t be taken seriously with this defense, probably why pollsters are reluctant to rank them any higher than they are!!
  • I have been pretty vocal about my disappointment with Ole Miss this year. This team had the talent and experience to compete at a very high level but it’s almost like the team believed the hype in the media outlets and forgot that they still had to show up and play the games. QB Snead is probably the biggest disappointment. Many experts, including myself, had him as a legitimate preseason Heisman candidate. But it didn’t take long for Snead to prove everyone wrong!! This week the Rebels host their former coach and if Ole Miss wants to salvage an average season they can do it by beating Tennessee. Emotions will be running high and I am willing to bet that if the hometown boys don’t get the job done their fans will boo them right off the field!!
  • Oklahoma is deflated. The team had high expectations as always but after losing QB Bradford hasn’t been the same. Bradford is living proof as to why these kids should head to the NFL when the opportunity is there. If you are healthy take the millions and run. You can always go back to school!! As damaged goods now Bradford’s NFL stock will drop significantly as a result of the injury!!
  • Speaking of damaged goods Florida QB Tim Tebow hasn’t been the same since returning from that concussion. His team keeps winning but Tebow’s production has dropped significantly, proof the injury affected him more than anyone wants to acknowledge. Tebow is another player that should have left for the NFL. I realize he is a man of high morale standards and that is great in today’s world where many kids don’t seem to have any!! However, taking the millions and running would have only put Tebow in a position to give even more to his causes. Granted, there is a strong chance he still gets his chance in the NFL and perhaps still gets his millions but I can’t help but to think that his stock has dropped significantly as a result of that concussion!!
  • How funny is Boise State? After their cover was blown and they were heavily criticized for “strategic scheduling” the team now goes into the public spotlight and states that no big conference program wants to take them up on their offer to play them!! Give me a break!! For years Boise has done nothing but schedule cupcake teams and typically one “tough” out of conference game, which happens to be Oregon – at HOME!! Also consider the fact that they probably play in one of the nation’s easiest conferences too!! If Boise wants to earn the respect of the BCS what they need to do is play at LEAST 2 big conference programs, preferably top 25 programs, ON THE ROAD!! Let’s look at TCU - the Frogs are also undefeated but the reason why they rank higher than Boise in all polls is because this year they went on the road and beat Virginia and Clemson, two big conference opponents. And not too mention they had to play conference rival BYU, a ranked opponent, on the road too!! Who has Boise played this year on the road?? Want another lesson in “scheduling”?? Look at Nevada!! Nevada opened the season with B2B games on the ROAD against Notre Dame and Colorado State and then returned home off that swing to play Missouri!! Despite being competitive they lost all 3 games but now are running their conference schedule. Should it surprise us?? Hell no!! But come Bowl time if a team like Nevada had an equal record to Boise Nevada would, and rightfully so, get the nod over Boise to play in a bigger bowl game!! Bottom line, Boise needs to stop sugar-coating their success and start stepping up and scheduling quality opponents on the ROAD!!
