What we have learned so far:

  • Idaho continues to chug along and is now 6-1 after beating Hawaii. I love Cinderella stories and this has to be one of the best of the year!! Idaho has now covered the spread in all 7 games this year. I would love to see this team get by their next 3 opponents and set up a huge clash with Boise.
  • Speaking of Cinderella stories Cincinnati is a pretty darn good story too. The Bearcats went ot Tampa and beat South Florida but the win didn’t come cheap – the Bearcats lost QB Tony Pike to injury and his return is unknown. Unfortunately for the Bearcats as Pike goes so goes this team - if he is out for the season then I am afraid this Cinderella story won’t have a fairytale ending!!
  • TCU earned some respect from me this week after blasting Colorado State the way they did. CSU played them tough through most of the first half but then it was like a switch went on for the Horned Frogs and you blinked and they were up more than 30!! TCU travels to BYU for a huge game this week. If they can get by BYU the Frogs should go unbeaten!!
  • Iowa continues to impress after their huge road win at Wisconsin. Down 10 early the team never lost its composure and methodically got back into the game and once they tied it they simply dominated the rest of the way. At 6-0 the Hawkeyes a legitimate top 10 team!!
  • Ohio State QB Pryor proved again this weekend that he is over-rated. The kid has good size and feet but simply makes poor decisions. However, I don’t blame Pryor as much as I blame the coaches!! The offensive unit seems to be going through an identity crisis. Are they a pro set or spread offense?? They do not have a consistent ground game and have no real weapons at the wideout position, something I cited at the onset. This team currently ranks in the top 20 but don’t be surprised if they are not there when the season is over!!
  • Nebraska is average at-best. While many polls had the Huskers ranked as high as 15 last week I didn’t have them ranked at all and the Huskers proved to me why I passed them up. This team plays small and lacks any real playmakers. Without any real passing game and a defense that proved just how vulnerable it is against a legitimate offense this team will only struggle down the stretch!!
  • Texas escaped with a narrow win over rival Oklahoma but I still maintain the Longhorns are over-rated. The fact that they struggled against an injury-plagued OU team proved to me just how over-rated they are. Despite being 6-0 the Longhorns have benefited from one of the easiest schedules in the nation. Prior to beating OU their other wins have been very unimpressive – against La. Monroe, Wyoming, Texas Tech, UTEP and Colorado. And it is worth noting their 10 point win over Texas Tech also came against an injury-plagued team. QB McCoy has completed 70 percent of his passes for over 1500 yards but to consider him a legitimate Heisman contender is absurd. Against one of the easiest schedules in the nation this kid is ONLY averaging 256 yards passing and has thrown 7 picks against ONLY 11 TDs – sorry folks – THIS is NOT Heisman material nor is it a top NFL prospect in my opinion!!
  • Alabama running back Mark Ingram had a dominating performance against South Carolina this weekend and this has him in the spotlight as a Heisman hopeful. Ingram has more than 900 yards rushing in 7 games this season, not an easy task when you are facing some of the best defenses every week in the SEC. For me, to be considered a legitimate Heisman candidate you must demonstrate the ability to carry the team on your shoulders in a time of need and Ingram proved that he is capable this weekend. Ingram faces his toughest tests in the coming weeks but if he continues to impress he has a legitimate shot of becoming Alabama’s first Heisman winner.
