College Football - Week 1 Summary and Recap

The college football week kicked off with some big surprises, most notably the BYU upset over Oklahoma and Ohio State’s pick-2 to hold off Navy in the games closing moments. Unfortunately, some of these highlights may get lost in the unfortunate injury to Oklahoma QB Sam Bradford and Oregon RB LeGarrette Blount’s punch that landed him an immediate suspension from the team for the year. And what would be a weekend of college football without some bad/controversial calls from the officials and we certainly had our share of them.

Here is what I learned during the first week:

• BYU looked impressive in their upset win but don’t expect them to run the table!

• Illinois is all hype again.

• Ohio State looks slow.

• LSU’s defense is not good.

• Cal is as good as advertised!

• Sam Bradford is walking proof that you should take the big money from the NFL while you can!

• Duke and Temple should be kicked out D-1A! They would struggle to be competitive at 1-AA or 2 level and my money says Mount Union as the premier D-3 school could beat both programs!

• South Carolina’s offense may be worse than last year – and I didn’t think that was possible!

• Oklahoma State can thank the NCAA and officials for their win! The NCAA really needs to do away with the personal foul calls in the secondary! Let the kids play for crying out loud!

• The smurf turf in Boise really is a magic carpet!

• LeGerrette Blout is a moron.

• Ole Miss QB Jevan Snead is good but might be slightly over-rated. It doesn’t take much to shake him up.

• UCLA won but is still a bad team.

• Colorado State is better than people think!

• Bobby Bowden should retire and put everyone out of their misery!

• The U. is young but extremely talented with the heart of a champion!

• Rutgers invested a ton of money in their new stadium upgrades – they would have been smarter to invest all that money into their basketball program instead!

• The MAC conference is horrible – don’t expect any cindarella stories this year! Although it is worth noting that Buffalo coach Turner Gill can coach – it won’t be long before he lands a big time job!
